Fitzgerald Marine Reserve Critical Coastal Area Pilot Project

Project Documents & Links   |   Public Workshop  |  Project Timeline

The Fitzgerald Marine Reserve Critical Coastal Area
Pilot Project ("Fitzgerald CCA") is one of five CCA pilot projects in the state.  The statewide CCA fosters collaboration among local stakeholders and government agencies to better coordinate resources and focus efforts on coastal watersheds in critical need of protection from polluted runoff.

The goals of the CCA program are to (1) improve degraded coastal water quality, and (2) provide extra protection to marine and estuarine areas of high resource value along California's coast.
The program is jointly administered by the State Water Resources Control Board and the California Coastal Commission.  The local Fitzgerald CCA is hosted by the Resource Conservation District.

The goals of the Fitzgerald CCA are to:
  1. Improve water quality by minimizing or eliminating adverse water quality impacts to the Reserve from the contributing watersheds.
  2. Foster a watershed ethic in the Midcoast communities that protects and improves coastal water quality.
  3. Apply appropriate management measures to all land uses in the watersheds that flow into the Reserve to prevent nonpoint source pollution from entering the Reserve.
A Steering Committee operating as a collaborative forum has completed a draft watershed assessment and will be developing a plan to prevent or reduce nonpoint source pollution in the Reserve and contributing watersheds.  The Steering Committee includes representatives from Montara Water and Sanitary District, Resource Conservation District, Moss Beach Ranch, California Coastal Commission, San Mateo County, Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, and the Regional Water Quality Control Board.
